In my 25 years of experience as a therapist, I’ve seen first-hand how important it is for everyone – regardless of age – to be able to communicate about their feelings openly. Feeling heard when you do so is equally crucial.
Many behavioural issues are created or worsened by unmet emotional needs. If these remain unaddressed, the problem behaviours can’t be resolved. That’s why fostering engagement and communication between parent and child is so important.
I see a lot of parenting advice that emphasizes consistent punishments and rewards as the best method to deal with problem behaviour.
While well-intentioned, this can actually be harmful! It definitely doesn’t make the child feel any better, and it often makes parents feel like they’ve failed somehow.
The truth is, it’s not your fault, and it’s not your child’s fault either. Every relationship has its sticking points and difficulties…some are just harder to work through.
That’s where I can help. By using music, art, play, and talk therapy I create a safe place for children to understand and express their emotions without judgement. This lets parents understand what’s happening in their child’s inner world, making communication much simpler and easier.
I believe in a world where every child feels loved, secure and free to be themselves.
In order for that to happen, they need appropriate support, and to feel heard and valued. If they are, they will grow into healthy adults and create the good in the world that we so need.
